How do I match colour across hoodie and jogger sets?

Part of Hoodies & Sweatshirts in Finetex Talk — buyer questions answered by the Finetex editorial team.

The question

A brand selling fleece hoodie and jogger sets gets photos from customers showing that the top and bottoms are slightly different shades, especially in grey and pastel colours, and the retailer is asking for a fix.

Finetex Editorial Team – Main answer

Short answer: Hoodies and joggers sold as a set are expected to match, but they are often cut from different rolls, made at different times and finished with different ribs and trims, so small shade differences become visible when the pieces are worn together. Light, pastel and heathered greys show differences most, because small changes in dye or yarn blend are easy to see. The main causes are using different fabric dye lots for tops and bottoms, rib made by another supplier or dyed separately, different finishing or garment washing for each piece, and fading or shrinking at different rates. To keep sets matching, cut both pieces from the same fabric lot and rib lot, dye or wash them together where the process allows, approve the shade on a finished set rather than on swatches, and assess shade differences with ISO 105-J03 or the ISO 105-A02 grey scale under one agreed light source. Check colour fastness to washing with ISO 105-C06 on both pieces, since a difference that is small when new can grow if one piece fades faster. Pack the two pieces as a matched set from the same lot.

Causes of mismatch

  • Different fabric dye lots.
  • Rib from another supplier or dye lot.
  • Different finishing or washing.
  • Different fading and shrinkage.

Keeping sets matched

  • Cut both pieces from the same fabric and rib lots.
  • Dye or wash together where possible.
  • Approve shade on a finished set.
  • Pack matched sets from the same lot.

Colours that need extra care

  • Pastels and light colours.
  • Heathered greys and melanges.
  • Very dark colours that may fade.

A worked example

As an illustration, if grey sets do not match, the factory could reserve one fabric lot for both pieces, cut tops and bottoms together, and shade-check pairs before packing.

Selling pieces separately

If tops and bottoms are also sold separately, plan stock so reorders of one piece match the other. Keep reference samples of each lot.

Trims and labels

Drawcords, zip tapes and woven labels should be checked against both pieces. A drawcord dyed to match the joggers but not the hoodie can make a set look mismatched even when the fabric matches.

Limits

Some shade difference between lots is unavoidable. Lot control reduces visible mismatch within a set but cannot guarantee identical colour across different production runs.

Facts, recommendations and uncertainty

Established: matching sets depends on fabric and rib lot control and consistent finishing. Recommendation: cut both pieces from one lot, approve on finished sets and pack by lot. Uncertain: how close a match your customers expect for each colour.

Sources and further reading

Standards and regulations are referenced by their published scope. Test parameters, cycles and pass levels should be agreed with your laboratory for the specific product; legal requirements should be confirmed for each destination market.

Three more perspectives

Finetex Editorial Team – Product Development

Approve shade on a finished hoodie and jogger together, ideally after washing. Choose rib and trim colours that are dyed with the body or deliberately contrasting. Consider whether heathered colours need a tighter yarn blend specification to stay consistent between pieces. Check the set in daylight and shop lighting, since some greys shift between light sources. Approve drawcord colours on the finished pair as well.

Finetex Editorial Team – Quality & Care

Shade-check hoodies and joggers in pairs before packing and record lot numbers on both pieces. Wash a sample set from each lot and compare colour change. Keep a sealed approved set as the reference for later lots and for reviewing any complaints. Check that drawcords and labels on both pieces match the approved set, and record any pairs that had to be re-sorted.
