Do I need hang tags on underwear?

Part of Waistbands, Labels, Printing & Packaging in Finetex Talk — buyer questions answered by the Finetex editorial team.

The question

A brand selling boxer briefs in printed boxes wonders whether it also needs hang tags. Its factory offers swing tags at extra cost, and a retail buyer asked where the price sticker will go.

Finetex Editorial Team – Main answer

Short answer: Hang tags are usually not required by themselves, but the information they carry can be. In the US, fibre content, country of origin and the company identity must be on labels attached to the product, under 16 CFR Part 303, and care instructions must be on a permanent care label under the Care Labeling Rule. That rule also says that if a packaged or folded product hides the care label, the care information must also appear on the outside of the package or on a hang tag. In the EU, Regulation 1007/2011 requires fibre composition labelling; care and size labelling are not covered by it. So if your box or bag clearly shows the required information, a hang tag is optional. Use one when it adds value: price or barcode space, branding, a size guide or retailer requirements.

What labels must carry

  • US: fibre content, country of origin and manufacturer identity on labels; care instructions on a permanent label.
  • EU: fibre composition, in the language required by the member state where sold.
  • Country and retailer rules may add more.

When information must be outside

Under the US Care Labeling Rule, if customers cannot see or easily find the care label because of packaging or folding, the care information must also be on the outside of the package or on a hang tag. Many brands also put fibre content and size on the package so shoppers can read them.

When hang tags help

  • Retail price and barcode on unboxed items.
  • Brand story, fabric benefits or certifications that can be supported.
  • Size guidance for unfamiliar fits.
  • Retailers who require their own ticket format.

When to skip them

Boxed or bagged underwear with all information printed on the pack often does not need a hang tag. Removing tags also reduces plastic fasteners and labour.

Practical points

  • Attach tags with fasteners that do not damage fine knits.
  • Keep tag claims consistent with the label and test results.
  • Check that tags do not cover required package information.

Matching tags to channels

A brand often needs different answers for different channels. For online sales in a printed polybag or box, the package can carry the required information and a hang tag adds little. For department stores that display unboxed multi-packs or single items on hangers, a tag with price, size and barcode may be expected. For premium boxes, the brand story can go on the box or an insert card instead of a tag. Decide per channel and record the decision in the packaging specification for each style.

Limits

This summary is based on official US and EU texts but is not legal advice. Check current rules for each market.

Facts, recommendations and uncertainty

Established: required information must be on labels; US care information must appear outside a package if the label is hidden. Recommendation: decide hang tags by channel and retailer needs. Uncertain: national and retailer requirements beyond these rules.

Standards and regulations are referenced by their published scope. Test parameters, cycles and pass levels should be agreed with your laboratory for the specific product; legal requirements should be confirmed for each destination market.

Three more perspectives

Finetex Editorial Team – Sourcing

Ask your retailers whether they require hang tags, their own price tickets or a barcode position before ordering tags. Request a separate price for tags, fasteners and labour. If packaging already shows all required information, compare the cost of tags with the benefit. Put tag artwork, placement and fastener type in the purchase order. Ask the factory whether it can apply different packing for different channels within one order, and what extra handling that adds.

Finetex Editorial Team – Product Development

In product development, decide where each piece of information lives: sewn label, package or tag. Make sure the package shows care and composition if it hides the label. Keep tag text short and consistent with test results. Choose fine needles or loop locks so fasteners do not leave holes in micro modal or other fine knits. Where a tag is used, design it so it does not hang over the waistband print or cover the window in the packaging.

Finetex Editorial Team – Quality & Care

In inspection, check that tags, labels and packaging all show the same size, composition and barcode. Check tag position and fastener damage on sampled pieces. Confirm that tags do not cover the barcode or required information on the package. Keep approved tag samples with the packaging standard for final inspection. When channels have different packing, check that each carton contains the right packing version for its destination before it is sealed.
