Does a T-shirt need shoulder taping?

Part of T-Shirts, Undershirts & Tank Tops in Finetex Talk — buyer questions answered by the Finetex editorial team.

The question

A brand's samples from one factory have shoulder-to-shoulder tape, while another factory's samples have none. The brand wants to know whether taping is worth specifying and what difference it makes.

Finetex Editorial Team – Main answer

Short answer: Shoulder taping is a strip of tape sewn along the shoulder seam, and sometimes across the back neck, to stop the seam stretching out and to make it neater and more comfortable. Knit jersey stretches easily, and the weight of the garment hangs from the shoulders, so untaped shoulders can lengthen over time and look wavy, especially on heavier or looser knits. Tape also covers the seam allowance, which can reduce irritation. A tape is not always needed: light, fitted tees with stable fabric may not need it, while heavier, boxy and printed tees usually benefit. Common options are clear elastic tape, twill tape or self-fabric binding; the choice affects stretch, comfort and look. Compare samples after washing by measuring shoulder length.

What taping does

  • Stabilises the shoulder seam so it does not stretch.
  • Covers seam allowances for comfort and a neater inside.
  • Supports the weight of heavier fabrics.

Types of tape

  • Clear elastic tape: keeps some stretch, invisible, common on fitted tees.
  • Twill or cotton tape: firm, stable, often on heavier tees.
  • Self-fabric binding: neat look, used across the back neck.

When it helps

  • Heavyweight and boxy tees.
  • Garments with heavy prints at the chest or back.
  • Loose knits or fabrics that stretch easily.

How to check

  • Measure shoulder length new and after several washes with an ISO 6330 procedure.
  • Check comfort and whether the tape is visible.
  • Check the tape shrinks similarly to the fabric, using ISO 5077, to avoid puckering.

A worked example

The brand washes both samples ten times. The untaped heavy tee's shoulders lengthen by about 1 cm and look wavy, while the taped shirt keeps its shape. The brand specifies twill tape for its heavyweight tees and clear elastic tape for its fitted tees.

Cost and production

Taping adds material and a small amount of sewing time, usually a minor part of the garment cost. It also needs a machine attachment and an operator who keeps tension even. Ask the factory to show taped and untaped seams from its own line before choosing.

Limits

Taping adds a small cost and must be sewn correctly. A tape that shrinks or is too tight can pucker the shoulder.

Facts, recommendations and uncertainty

Established: shoulder tape stabilises the seam and covers allowances. Recommendation: specify tape for heavy, boxy or printed tees and compare washed samples. Uncertain: whether the cost is needed for light, fitted tees on stable fabrics.

Sources and further reading

Standards and regulations are referenced by their published scope. Test parameters, cycles and pass levels should be agreed with your laboratory for the specific product; legal requirements should be confirmed for each destination market.

Three more perspectives

Finetex Editorial Team – Sourcing

Specify the tape type, width and placement in the tech pack so all factories follow the same construction. Compare quotes with and without taping, and check tape supply lead times. Confirm that tape is included in each factory's price and bill of materials, so a lower quote is not lower because the tape was left out. Ask where the tape is sourced and whether it is colour-matched to the body. When moving production between factories, send a taped reference garment so the new factory can match the construction exactly.

Finetex Editorial Team – Product Development

Sample tees with and without tape and wash test them. Check comfort, look and shoulder length change. Record the approved construction and tape type. Decide where the tape runs: shoulder only, shoulder to shoulder across the back neck, or neck binding. Each gives a different look and feel inside the garment. Check the tape against print placement on the back, since a firm tape near a large print can distort it. Record the approved option in the tech pack with a photo.

Finetex Editorial Team – Quality & Care

Check that the tape is sewn evenly without puckering on inspection. Measure shoulder length on a few garments after washing and compare with the specification. Check tape tension on the first garments of each line, since uneven tension causes puckering or a twisted seam. Measure shoulder seams on washed samples from each lot and compare with the specification and approved sample. Confirm the tape is caught fully in the seam along its length.
