Does cotton or modal underwear pill more in real use?

Does cotton or modal underwear pill more in real use? What drives pilling in each fibre, how to test it, and how to reduce it.

Does cotton or modal underwear pill more in real use?

Part of Underwear Fabrics & Comfort in Finetex Talk — buyer questions answered by the Finetex editorial team.

The question

A brand selling both cotton and modal boxer briefs wants to know which fabric will cause more pilling complaints.

Finetex Editorial Team – Main answer

Short answer: It depends on the specific fabrics. Cotton fabrics can fuzz and pill when made from shorter fibres or loose yarns; modal fabrics can pill when fibres are very fine and the surface is abraded. Yarn quality, twist, knit density and laundering matter more than the fibre name. Compare the two fabrics using the same test and wash routine.

What drives pilling

Pills form when loose fibre ends tangle and remain anchored. Cotton with short staple has more fibre ends; modal pills may be more persistent because regenerated fibres can be strong enough to hold pills on the surface rather than breaking off.

How to compare

  • Test both fabrics with ISO 12945-2 after the same number of washes.
  • Wear-test in high-friction styles.
  • Compare surface appearance against approved standards.

Reducing pilling

  • Choose combed or longer-staple yarns.
  • Use tighter knits where suitable.
  • Advise gentle washing and lower drying heat.

Limits

Lab grades rank fabrics; they do not predict exact wear time.

Reading pilling complaints

When complaints come in, note where pilling appears and on which colours. Pilling concentrated at the inner thigh and seat points to friction during wear; pilling all over after a few washes points to the yarn or the wash. Dark colours make pills more visible, so a colour-specific pattern may simply reflect visibility rather than a different fabric. Tracking complaints this way helps you compare cotton and modal fairly.

The role of yarn and knit

Pilling is often more about yarn and fabric construction than about cotton or modal as such. Short fibres, low yarn twist and loosely knitted fabrics let fibre ends migrate to the surface and form pills under friction. Combed and compact yarns have fewer short fibres and protruding ends, and tighter knits hold fibres in place. A well-made modal jersey can outperform a basic open-end cotton, and the reverse can also be true.

A fair comparison

  • Use the same construction, weight and colour for both fibres where possible.
  • Wash both with the same procedure, such as one based on ISO 6330, before testing.
  • Test with the same pilling method, for example ISO 12945-2, and the same number of rubs.
  • Inspect garments at the inner thigh and seat, not only fabric swatches.

This makes the result about the fabric choice, not about differences in test conditions.

Facts, recommendations and uncertainty

Established: pilling depends on yarn, knit and laundering. Recommendation: compare fabrics with the same test. Uncertain: real-world pilling rates without wear testing.

Sources and further reading

Standards and regulations are referenced by their published scope. Test parameters, cycles and pass levels should be agreed with your laboratory for the specific product; legal requirements should be confirmed for each destination market.

Three more perspectives

Finetex Editorial Team – Sourcing

Ask both mills for pilling results on the exact fabrics you are buying, after washing, using the same method and number of cycles. Generic claims about modal or cotton are less useful than data on your fabric. Ask for yarn type and count too, such as combed, compact or open-end, so you can see whether a price difference reflects a different yarn quality rather than the fibre name.

Finetex Editorial Team – Quality & Care

Track complaints by fabric, colour and style to see which combination drives pilling. That data helps decide whether to change the fabric or the style. Compare complaint garments with retained samples washed the same way; if retained pieces stay clean, consider wash habits such as high heat or mixing with rough fabrics, and address them in care advice.
